Service To Go

Service To Go is a new opportunity for agencies to get big projects done.

HandsOn Mid-Willamette Valley is excited to launch a new page of our website: Service To Go! These are fun and innovative community service projects that volunteers can do wherever and whenever volunteers want. Where do agencies come in? We need your projects!

The project ideas that come from you become options for our volunteers to choose on the website. We’re looking for projects that your agency can never have enough of. The projects should be something that volunteers can do in their own time and at their own home. Fun, crafty projects that are family friendly are the projects that work best. Our volunteers want to do these projects for you! The best part is, we do not need you to provide any of the materials – We just need the directions!  Volunteers will take care of the rest.
If you have a project idea or want more information, please contact Nicole Walker Sundby at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Western Oregon University Students Offer Assessment Consultation

This spring Western Oregon University is offering an evaluation and assessment class through the department of Health and Physical Education. The professor has built in a service-learning component to the class requirements. The students will all be contacting partners of HandsOn to learn about your programs and processes. The students will then write up strong questions, relevant to the work you do, that can be used to evaluate and assess your programs. If you choose to participate you will be given the questions they come up with and can conduct a self-assessment. You also may be able to ask the student to conduct the assessment for you, although this is not a part of their class assignment due to time constraints. The students are selecting who they contact from our list of partners. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the professor, Dr. Charles Daramola, at 503-838-8470 or (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Great Toolkit for Service Providers

Do you need help with basic strategic planning, organizational assessment and readiness, effective marketing strategies, financial management or sustainability? Recently, two HandsOn MWV Americorps members attended a ‘Changing Communities for the Better’ training hosted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and brought back a great toolkit to our communities. ‘Sustaining Grassroots Community-Based Programs: A Toolkit for Community and Faith-Based Service Providers’ is a great resource for basic information and worksheets to help your organization or agency sustain itself.  You can download a PDF copy or order a free hard copy of the Toolkit at this web address: Ncadistore.SAMHSA.gov

What is Risk Management?

Risk Management is a system to evaluate risks and take proactive steps to deal with identified risks.

Why do we need a risk management system?
► To protect our agency, its clients and its paid staff and volunteers.
► To run a better program to meet our organization’s mission.

Steps in Risk Management

1. Identify risks
    What may go wrong

2. Evaluate each risk
How likely is it to occur?
What is the amount of potential harm?

3. Control risks by choosing to:
Stop or delay activity until safe
Eliminate/diminish risk - change the way volunteers are screened, trained and supervised
Minimize harm – develop procedures to handle a disaster or emergency
Transfer liability – insurance policy, waiver, etc.
